Infosys facing high employee attrition

- 12.9 per cent attrition rate in July-September quarter
- Up by 1 percentage point over the April-June quarter

It is one of the most sought after companies to work for as far as IT (information technology) professionals are concerned. But Bangalore-based software exporter, India's second largest, Infosys Technologies Ltd., is facing a high attrition of employees for a variety of reasons. Though the company added 10,795 people on a gross basis during the July-September quarter of the current fiscal year, the attrition rate (number of persons leaving the organisation) touched 12.9 per cent, according to T.V. Mohandas Pai, head, Human Resource Development, Education and Research, Infosys. The net addition during the second quarter was 7,741 employees.

The attrition rate has gone up by 1 percentage point over the April-June quarter of the current fiscal year when the rate was 11.9 per cent. Of the 12.9 per cent attrition rate in the second quarter, 2.9 per cent was "involuntary attrition." The attrition rate is more pronounced in the one to two years' and five to six years' experience categories. In the first category, workers leave the company to pursue higher education, go abroad or for personal reasons, including marriage and relocation, while some of them do not make the grade. Many in this category also leave because they do not get the rating and fitment they want.

"In the five to six years' experience category, employees leave because they don't get promoted," he said.

Infosys plans to hire 5,700 professionals during the October-December quarter of the current fiscal year.
